The experiences children have in their earliest years can shape their learning for life. At Koru Kids, we believe that music and art aren’t just fun – they’re fundamental. These creative practices provide rich sensory experiences, support key developmental milestones, and build a strong foundation for future growth.

In our nurturing, play-based environments, music and art are woven into the daily rhythm of what we offer – helping tamariki explore, express, and connect in meaningful ways.

Here’s why these tools matter so much in the early years, and how we bring them to life at Koru Kids.

Why Music and Art Matter in Early Childhood

From finger painting to singing waiata, creative activities play a powerful role in child development. They engage multiple senses, spark joy, and provide essential ways for children to process and communicate their thoughts and emotions – often before they have the words to do so.

Studies show that exposure to music and visual art enhances brain development, particularly in areas related to language, memory, spatial reasoning, and emotional regulation. Creative expression is more than just a nice-to-have – it’s a key building block for lifelong learning.

The Developmental Benefits of Music

Music is one of the first ways children begin to understand rhythm, pattern, and sound. Through singing, clapping, and movement, they learn to listen closely, follow instructions, and develop a strong sense of timing and coordination.

Musical experiences in early learning settings help to:

  • Strengthen listening and memory
  • Support early language acquisition
  • Develop rhythm and motor skills through movement-based play
  • Build confidence and a sense of belonging through group singing

At Koru Kids, waiata are part of our daily practice – connecting children not only to rhythm and melody, but also to te reo Māori and Aotearoa’s cultural heritage.

The Developmental Benefits of Art

Art allows tamariki to explore colour, shape, texture, and form – but it also does so much more. Whether they’re drawing, painting, or sculpting, children are learning to make decisions, take creative risks, and express complex feelings in safe and empowering ways.

Art supports:

  • Fine motor skill development
  • Visual processing and hand-eye coordination
  • Creativity, experimentation, and problem-solving
  • Emotional self-expression and decision-making

Importantly, we focus on the process rather than the end product – ensuring every child feels free to explore at their own pace.

How Koru Kids Integrates Music and Art

Across our Te Aroha, Mahira, and Pakiki rooms, music and art are integrated in age-appropriate, child-led ways.

In the Te Aroha (infants and toddlers) space, music often accompanies transitions and routines, offering calm and connection. In Mahira, children engage in simple group instruments and sensory art, while in Pakiki, older tamariki begin composing their own songs, exploring different mediums, and expressing unique ideas through open-ended projects.

We also incorporate Māori visual arts and traditional waiata as part of our bicultural commitment, giving children meaningful ways to connect with Aotearoa’s cultural identity.

Our learning environment is filled with natural materials, accessible resources, and space for spontaneous creativity – allowing children to lead their learning journey through music and art.

Tips for Parents: Music and Art at Home

You don’t need a music degree or an art studio to support your child’s creativity. Here are a few simple ways to bring the magic of music and art into your everyday routine:

  • Keep a basket of crayons, paper, and child-safe paints on hand
  • Sing familiar songs together – even if it’s just in the car or at bath time
  • Make DIY instruments like shakers or drums from household items
  • Focus on enjoyment and expression, not perfection

Remember: every scribble is communication. Every off-key note is learning. Your encouragement builds confidence more than any artistic masterpiece!

Creativity is the Foundation

At Koru Kids, we see creativity as a language – one that empowers tamariki to make sense of their world, connect with others, and build lifelong skills. Music and art are not side activities. They are essential to who we are, and how we learn.
