Creativity is more than just drawing pictures or making crafts – it’s the foundation of problem-solving, critical thinking, and self-expression.

Encouraging creativity in young pēpi (babies) and tamariki (children) helps them develop confidence, resilience, and a lifelong love of learning. Whether at home, in the classroom, or within a supportive early learning environment, fostering creativity is one of the greatest gifts we can offer our whānau (family).

Why Creativity Matters in Early Childhood

From the moment our pēpi begin exploring the world, they are using creativity to make sense of what they see, hear, and feel. Creativity isn’t just about making art – it supports cognitive, social, and emotional growth in profound ways. Engaging in creative activities helps our mokopuna (grandchildren/young ones):

  • Develop problem-solving skills by experimenting with new ideas and solutions.
  • Build resilience as they learn from mistakes and try again.
  • Express their thoughts, emotions, and experiences in unique and meaningful ways.
  • Strengthen their ability to collaborate, communicate, and think outside the box.

By nurturing creativity, we help tamariki develop into confident, adaptable, and curious learners who approach challenges with enthusiasm and innovation.

Creating a Creative Environment at Home and in the Classroom

A child’s surroundings play a big role in encouraging creativity. Providing opportunities for open-ended play and unstructured time allows them to explore their ideas freely and without pressure. Here are some ways to design a space that sparks imagination:

  • Offer a variety of materials – Set up an easily accessible area with art supplies, building materials, and everyday objects like cardboard boxes, fabric scraps, and natural materials for loose parts play.
  • Encourage storytelling – Create a cosy reading nook, introduce puppets and props, and encourage pēpi and tamariki to invent their own pakiwaitara (stories).
  • Allow for open-ended play – Toys that don’t have a single function, such as blocks, clay, or dress-up clothes, inspire more creative exploration than toys with predefined uses.

Whether at home or in the classroom, a thoughtfully-designed space fosters curiosity, independence, and creative expression.

Activities That Encourage Creativity

Creativity comes in many forms! Here are some engaging ways to inspire young minds:

  • Art-based activities – Encourage painting, drawing, rāranga (weaving), sculpting, and collage-making with different textures and colours.
  • Music and movement – Dancing, waiata (singing), and playing musical instruments allow children to express themselves physically and emotionally.
  • Dramatic play and storytelling – Role-playing, puppet shows, and imaginative storytelling help build language skills and emotional intelligence.
  • STEM-based creativity – Building with rākau (wood), exploring te taiao (nature), and engaging in simple pūtaiao (science) experiments nurture curiosity and innovation.

The key is to provide opportunities for kids and pre-schoolers to explore, create, and discover in their own unique way.

Encouraging a Growth Mindset

A child’s creativity flourishes when they feel safe to take risks and make mistakes. Here’s how to encourage a growth mindset:

  • Praise effort, not just results – Celebrate the process of creating rather than focusing on the final product.
  • Encourage experimentation – Let your child try new things without fear of getting it “wrong.”
  • Ask open-ended questions – Instead of “What did you make?” try “Tell me about what you’re creating!” to inspire deeper thinking.

When our mokopuna feel supported in their creative journey, they develop confidence, persistence, and a love for learning.

The Role of an Early Learning Centre in Fostering Creativity

A well-designed early learning environment provides the structure and support young children and pre-schoolers need to explore their creativity while ensuring they feel nurtured and valued.

At Koru Kids, we integrate creative learning into everyday activities through:

  • Engaging toi (art) and sensory experiences that allow tamariki to express themselves freely.
  • Music, movement, and storytelling that build confidence and communication skills.
  • STEM-based play and exploration that encourage curiosity and hands-on discovery.

Additionally, our passionate kaiako (educators) support and nurture creative thinking by encouraging curiosity, guiding exploration, and celebrating every child’s unique ideas.
